Many people assume that those who have been married longer will remain married forever. They may not realize that gray divorce, which is typically categorized as divorces involving people who are over 50 years old – and who have been married for years – is actually fairly common.

If you’re facing a gray divorce, there are specific changes you should be prepared for. Being able to plan for these concerns may help you to avoid undue stress as you go through the divorce and the adjustments after.

Changes in your social circle

Your social circle may change some as a result of the divorce. Some people you were close to may not want to take sides, so they might decide to take a step back from you and your ex. You may realize that you don’t have much in common with some people, so you may be the one to step back.

Changes in lifestyle

Many people who are going through a gray divorce are retired or quickly approaching retirement age. This poses a challenge for some because the retirement accounts were set up based on supporting one home. Now, they’ll likely have to fund two homes. This could mean that you have to reconsider your standard of living. It may even mean that you have to return to work to increase your income so you can afford to live the life you want.

Changes in emotional health

Gray divorce comes with a range of emotions. Even if you want the divorce, you may still experience some negative emotions. These often stem around the loss of companionship and familiarity. It’s usually best to address these as they creep up so they don’t continue to plague you. Remember, the divorce is a fresh start and an opportunity to rebuild your life in the way you want it.

One of the most effective ways you can address a gray divorce is by understanding your rights.  Having legal assistance can take some of the stress off you as you work through it all.
